Indra Jatra Day 1 | Yosin Pole Raising & Ancestor Rituals in Kathmandu

Indra Jatra is one of the biggest and most colorful festivals celebrated in Kathmandu, Nepal. It usually falls in September and lasts for eight days. The festival honors Lord Indra, the god of rain, and also remembers loved ones who have passed away.

Jatra begins in Kathmandu with sacred rituals on Day One. Known as Upaku Wanegu, families honor their ancestors by lighting oil lamps and offering food along the streets. The major highlight of the day is the raising of the sacred Yosin or Indra Dhwaja pole at Basantapur Durbar Square, which officially marks the start of the eight-day festival.

Crowds gather to witness traditional Newar music, cultural rituals, and prayers dedicated to Lord Indra, the god of rain and harvest. The atmosphere in Kathmandu becomes lively with chants, drums, and devotion as Indra Jatra kicks off with spiritual energy.
