Montauban, established in 1144, is among the oldest bastide towns in France.
It is located in the Occitanie region and was founded as a fortified settlement by Count Alphonse Jourdain of Toulouse.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Montauban became a stronghold of Protestant resistance against Catholic forces, especially during the Wars of Religion.
In 1629, King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu laid siege to the city, forcing it back under royal control.
Today, Montauban is known for its red-brick architecture, including the stunning Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) and the Ingres Bourdelle Museum, which is dedicated to the famous painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who was born there.
