The ship that refused to sink below the horizon but not due to Flat Earth’s Phantom

Last night, I watched a cruise ship that seemed to defy the horizon. For over an hour, she sailed steadily, yet her full silhouette remained visible—never dipping below the edge of the sea. Why? Because she was gliding above a looming sea surface, suspended by an optical phenomenon born of atmospheric layering. To her right, Point Reyes National Seashore shimmered in a mirage, its familiar contours distorted and elevated. To the left, the Farallon Islands also loomed unnaturally, their forms lifted and refracted by the same phenomenon. It made me wonder: could such striking illusions have once fueled the notion of a flat Earth?
