Sanjay Leela Bansali, known to be the Bollywood Screen Magic Maker has recently launched his Netflix series Heeramandi, the Diamond Bazaar. 'Hira Singh Di Mandi', was Hira Singh's food grain market in the walled city in the north west part of undivided India, now Lahore, Pakistan. Heeramandi was a song and dance community based on the glorious tawaif culture during the Mughal period. After, British colonization, Heeramandi gradually turned into a red-light district.
Little is it known that the tawaifs or the courtesans were not only the carriers of the rich traditions of art and culture, but were actively associated in the freedom movement in India. This particular song 'Azadi' is a patriotic piece from the series on these courtesans, jointly sung by Archana Gore, Pragati Joshi, Aditi Prabhudesai, Arohi, Aditi Paul, Tarannum Malik Jain, and Dipti Rege, composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, with lyrics penned by AM Turaz.
