In this episode of Deeper Than Journalism, I revisit the very first missing persons case that pushed me into this work — the tragic story of 29-year-old Andrew Berry Jr. from my hometown Philadelphia.
Andrew Berry Jr. went missing on November 6, 2016 near his home in Northeast Philadelphia. On November 22, 2016, Andrew was found shot multiple times in a wooded area near Waldemire Drive and Brookview Street in Northeast Philadelphia. Police responded around 11:06 p.m., locating him near an embankment leading toward Byberry Creek. Medics confirmed he had died at the scene.
For this recap, I spoke with Andrew’s sister-in-law, Taisha Zeigler, who shared her perspective, her pain, and why this case has stayed heavy on the family’s heart. Her voice adds powerful context to a story that deserves far more attention.
This was the first case that opened my eyes to how many families never get closure… and how many stories never get told.
