Pronouncing ‘ta-ka-dī-mī-ta-ka’, ‘ta-ka-dī-mī, ta-ka-ja-nū’, ‘nā’, and ‘hum’

In this series of three videos, Reena Esmail, composer of TāReKiṬa, demonstrates the pronunciation of each piece of text, as an educational resource for those intending to perform the piece. The text is made up of onomatopoeic syllables, similar to a scat in jazz, imitating the sounds of Indian instruments.

TāReKiṬa is a concert piece that blends the Indian and Western classical styles. The composer's scats are combined with a fast triple metre, vocal slides, and captivating melodies built on the Jog raga. Originally written during a workshop with the Urban Voices Project, as a way of exploring Indian rhythm and harmony, it is now published by Oxford University Press in a new SATB arrangement, in the new collection, Breath of Song, and as an individual choral leaflet, both coming out in January 2021.

Reena Esmail works between the worlds of Indian and Western classical music, to bring communities together through the creation of equitable musical spaces. Esmail holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, and has written for Kronos Quartet, Albany Symphony and Conspirare. A resident of Los Angeles, Esmail is the 20-23 Swan Family Artist in Residence with Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the 20-21 Composer in Residence with Seattle Symphony. She is the Artistic Director of Shastra, a non-profit organization that promotes cross-cultural music connecting musical traditions of India and the West.
