HE IS THE ONLY U. S. PRESIDENT EVER BURIED UNDER A FOREIGN FLAG.

This week I am back in Richmond, Virginia at Historic Hollywood Cemetery. Hollywood is a large 135 acre cemetery that was established in 1847 It’s the final resting place of 6-Virginia Governors, two Supreme Court Justices and over 18,000 confederate veterans in Including Generals Jeb Stuart and George Pickett. This cemetery is also the final resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and the Man we are going to visit today, John Tyler.

President Tyler was Vice President under William Henry Harrison. President Harrison was the first President to die while in office, serving only 31 days. This made John Tyler the first Vice President to ascend to the Presidency due to the death of a sitting President. President Tyler is one of eight Presidents born in Virginia, including William Henry Harris who is more closely associated with Ohio and Maybe Indiana. President Tyler was only 51 when he became President making him the youngest person to hold the office. His successor James K. Polk became the youngest at at 49.

President Tyler was a very unpopular President an served only one term before retiring to his home in Virginia. At the beginning of the Civil War, President Tyler became very active in Confederate Politics and was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives. However he died before he could take his seat in the Confederate Congress. At his funeral his coffin was draped with the Confederate Flag, making him the only U. S. President ot be buried under to flag of a foreign government. He is buried in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery just a few feet from President James Monroe.
