BEYOND THE BEZEL - ‘Feamainn’
Capturing Graham’s story took Elliot Brown to the cold clear waters of the Ards Peninsula. The EB Creative team ventured North West with the assistance of Land Rover and Land Rover Classics. Having enabled the Jamalon series the experience of becoming a Kelp Farmer with Peninsula kelp co for the day, it seemed only fitting to double up the journey to spend some much needed time with Graham and his family to help us appreciate what it takes to become a family of Sea Farmer’s.
Our creative duo, fresh from the overnight ferry from Liverpool immediately hit the ground running to meet with Graham at his house for the first time. After a quick cup of tea and the first dose of Peninsula kelp co products they were ready to hit the road again to begin the short drive around the peninsula to ‘recce’ potential film locations for the subsequent filming days. It was clear from the very beginning that Graham knew every inch and all the personal intricate details of history to the area. Our orange rocket (The bright orange G4 Land Rover Discovery) blended in completely inconspicuous to the local habit and actually enabled us a comfortable platform to begin to understand Graham, his methods, his vision and passions whilst traversing a unique landscape.
Heading back to Grahams with a better understanding of the area and the process of harvesting Kelp we moved straight on to capturing how Graham prepares the Kelp to be used in products. This initially consisted of some rigorous testing of every Peninsula Kelp Product from the team before it was safe to start setting up and shout ‘Action’. Now fully dosed up on Kelp and with the first scenes captured it was time to download and rest for the following day of production.
The early start enabled the team to meet with the guys from Jamalon and get into the water before the wind picked up. After a quick lesson in Kelp farming in some challenging conditions the group migrated to a much needed post swim cookout at a remote spot nearby. Locally caught fish, freshly baked bread and PK spices enabled everyone the much needed nutrition from a hard day's swim. Yet again Graham’s passion for education, farming and wild cooking captivated the group and left us all feeling humbled. As the wind picked up so did the chop, creating a submerged fog which made underwater filming near impossible, so the dice was rolled and the decision was made to wait out for the better forecasted conditions the following day. Heading back to the hotel that afternoon the team were anxious! Having been on location for two days to convey the story of Sea Farmer hardly any usable underwater footage had been captured.
Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning! But at least we had the wind on our side. Heading back to the cookout spot from the day previous we were pleased to see calm waters and a warm sky. Springing into action we captured Graham entering the water which to our relief had far superior visibility than before which gave us confidence for the afternoon of Underwater filming we had scheduled. With our Sunrise ‘Hero’ shots in the bag it was time for another wild cookout with bacon and egg sarnies on the beach.
Arriving at Grahams ‘Patch’ we quickly transitioned to our wetsuits before entering the cool, clear waters of the underwater crop. Navigating the reef, Graham guided the team through submerged caves and obstacles only to resurface to explain even more about the process of farming kelp. 5 hours in the water and with the batteries of the equipment beginning to become spent (that's what the team blamed it on anyway) EB’s first kelp farming experience was over. The last stop of the trip was a short drive to Graham’s sustainable allotment. At this point we were side swiped with the harshness of the Peninsula weather. In an attempt to enable the scene to look like a nice summer’s evening the team recruited the assistance of the orange rocket and its night to day spotlights.
That’s a WRAP! With all aspects of filming complete it was a quick dash back to the overnight ferry for an evening of downloading and overpriced beer. The EB creative team would like to thank Graham and his family for their hospitality and warm welcome. The peninsula kelp experience is one that will never be forgotten.
