Here's the Short History of Mauritius

The known history of Mauritius begins with its discovery by Arabs and Malays, followed by Europeans and its appearance on maps in the early 16th century.
Mauritius was successively colonized by the Netherlands, France and Great Britain, and became independent in12 March 1968.From 1834 to 1924 out of the estimated 458,000 indentured labourers who came from all over India to Mauritius, around 114,500 came from the Presidency of Madras. Tamil indentured labourers made up 25% of the total indentured population.
From around 1850 Tamil was taught in some schools such as Royal College Curepipe.
The Dutch set foot on the island in 1638 and the island was named in honor of Prince Maurice de Nassau. The Dutch settlement lasted only 25 years and the Dutch abandoned the Island in 1710 after 2 unsuccessful attempts of colonisation. The island was renamed Ile de France under the French rule, starting in 1715.
