The Dryas Impact Theory proposes that a catastrophic event occurred approximately 12,900 years ago, at the beginning of the Younger Dryas period, which caused a sudden and significant cooling of the Earth's climate, leading to the extinction of many large mammal species and the end of the Clovis culture in North America.
Proponents of the theory suggest that this event was caused by the impact of a comet or asteroid, which may have struck the Earth or exploded in the atmosphere, releasing large amounts of energy and creating a shockwave that could have triggered wildfires, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
Evidence supporting the theory includes the discovery of microscopic particles of melted rock, known as microspherules, and nano-diamonds, which are thought to be the result of an extraterrestrial impact, as well as the identification of a layer of sediment enriched in platinum, which is rare in Earth's crust but is commonly found in asteroids.
While the Dryas Impact Theory remains controversial and has not yet been fully substantiated, it represents an intriguing hypothesis for understanding the causes of major environmental and cultural changes in Earth's history.
