This week, we’re digging into one of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s essential Bossa Nova tunes — So Danço Samba. This classic embodies the rhythmic sophistication and smooth harmonic flow that define the Bossa Nova style. The harmony is fairly straight ahead, which gives us the perfect opportunity to focus on the groove — the subtle interaction between rhythm, articulation, and phrasing that makes Bossa Nova come alive. In this tutorial, we’ll break down the standard Bossa Nova bass feel, look at different rhythmic variations to bring life to the line, and explore how to support the melody while keeping the groove flowing. As usual, I’m playing the line on Double Bass here, but this one works beautifully on Bass Guitar too!
