Tsampika Monastery - The Patroness Of Rhodes island

The Monastery of Panagia Tsampika (Virgin Mary of Tsampika) is among the most popular places of pilgrimage among Orthodox Christians. Tsampika is a nickname that is believed to have been etymologically derived from ''samviki'', a term that refers to a specific type of ship, with the hill geophysically resembling a sailing vessel. Other scholars also claim that the adjective following the Virgin Mary is connected to a term, in the local dialect of Archangel ''tsampa'', that means spark or flame.
Under the imposing rock where the Monastery stands is located the Tsapika beach. It is a 800 long sandy beach of gold sand with turqoise waters. Dozens of beach facilities and water sports are available for all type of visitors.
Panagia Tsampika is also honored and venerated at Panagia of Lower Tsampika Church which is located by the main road. This is where the original miraculous icon is situated nowadays.
