The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in this video looks at the emerging challenges of Africa. Identified as the twin crises the video looks at:
1) the global financial crisis and,
2) the food crisis that has long existed among poor communities and is now getting worse due to the downturn in the global economy.
Africa has enjoyed steady economic progress over the last five years. But while the world's attention has recently focused on rescuing financial markets and banks from collapse, we should not forget the food crisis that developing countries face, particularly in Africa.
The video also focuses on rising oil prices and their adverse effects on most oil importing African countries. However oil prices have fallen by about $100 a barrel, to below $50 a barrel, on the New York Mercantile Exchange since peaking in July 2008.
The current global problem is therefore not oil prices but the global financial crisis.
This video features comments from:
1) IMF Managing Director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn,
2) IMF Director for Africa, Antoinette Sayeh, and
3) Goodall Gondwe, Malawi's Finance Minister and former IMF Director for Africa. More info on Goodall Gondwe at Gondwe.com
