Gangotri Gaumukh Yatra 2025 | Gangotri To Gaumukh Trek | Gaumukh Tapovan Yatra | Gaumukh Darshan2025
The Gomukh (Gaumukh) trek is a highly revered and popular trek in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. It's known for its spiritual significance as the source of the Bhagirathi River, which is one of the main headstreams of the holy Ganga River. The trek also offers breathtaking views of prominent Himalayan peaks like Shivling, Bhagirathi sisters (I, II, III), and Meru.
Here's a detailed breakdown of the Gomukh trek:
1. Location and Starting Point:
Location: Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India.
Starting Point (Base Camp): Gangotri (approx. 3,100m / 10,200 ft). Gangotri is well-connected by road from major cities like Dehradun and Rishikesh.
2. Trek Duration and Distance:
The standard Gomukh trek is typically part of a larger Gaumukh Tapovan Trek, which usually spans 6-7 days.
The total trekking distance for the Gaumukh Tapovan trek is around 46 km (round trip).
Gangotri to Gomukh specific distance: Approximately 18 km one way.
Gomukh to Tapovan (an extension for more experienced trekkers) is an additional 3-6 km one way.
3. Difficulty Level:
The Gomukh trek is generally considered moderate.
The trail from Gangotri to Bhojbasa is relatively well-defined and has low inclines.
The section from Bhojbasa to Gomukh can be rocky and more challenging, especially after the 2013 floods which damaged some parts of the trail.
The trek from Gomukh to Tapovan is considered moderate to difficult due to steep ascents, rocky terrain, and glacier crossings. This section is not recommended for beginners and requires prior high-altitude trekking experience.
4.Best Time to Trek:
The best time for the Gomukh trek is during two main seasons:
Summer (May to June): The weather is generally stable, though you might find some residual snow in early May. The Bhagirathi River flows strongly due to melting snow. This is also a popular time for pilgrims.
Autumn (September to October): Offers clear skies, vibrant autumn colors, and crisp views of the peaks. The weather is generally pleasant, and the trails are less crowded than in summer.
Avoid:
Monsoon (July to August): Heavy rainfall increases the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and makes the trails very slippery and dangerous.
Winter (November to April): Heavy snowfall makes the route inaccessible and dangerous, and Gangotri National Park remains closed.
5.Permits:
You need a permit from the District Forest Officer (D.F.O.) Uttarkashi to enter Gangotri National Park and trek to Gomukh.
Only a limited number of permits (around 150) are issued per day, so it's advisable to obtain them in advance, possibly online or through your trekking agency.
