The whole island of Atchin now has safe and clean water to their homes through a water project designed and built by ADRA Vanuatu with funding from New Zealand Government.
In celebrating their achievement on the 1st of February 2013, the whole island got together around the water tanks and ate over 20 Laplap Sosor(traditional root crop pudding) with the 15 student volunteers from Avondale College in Australia who helped the community built their water project.
Atchin has over 1000 people living on it and for over 100 years water for every day needs is either drawn from ground wells, caught directly from rain or sourced from streams on the main island of Malekula.
"Today, everyone is happy with their water" said Wilson, Atchin's water committee chairman. "Everyone will just turn on a tap to get water in front of their homes without walking distances to fetch water from a well".
ADRA Vanuatu with funds from New Zealand Government will design and build water projects for communities in TAFEA, Efate, Epi, Malekula and Ambrym.
