Nilbarahi Gana Naach, also known as Nilbarahi Dyo Pyakhan, is a centuries-old sacred masked dance performed in Bode, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur. Held annually for four nights and three days after Gai Jatra, it honors deities like Bhairav, Nilbarahi, Kumari, Simha, Dwarpal, and Ganesh with symbolic movements, traditional Newar music, and elaborate costumes.
According to legend, the goddess Nilbarahi once appeared to a local farmer and taught him the dance, beginning this life-long ritual tradition. Performers observe strict rules, remaining silent and fasting—including from water—throughout the event.
This ancient Newar heritage, practiced for over 500 years, reflects the deep spiritual and cultural roots of the Kathmandu Valley.
