Solar-powering coffee, livelihoods and opportunities for rural Timor-Leste communities

Clean, reliable energy is helping Timor-Leste’s coffee farmers process beans faster, cut waste and trial new solar-powered equipment, while nearby households gain safer access to electricity.

Through our #DFATBPP Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnership with Engineers Without Borders, Raw Material, Mara Mresa and the Australian Government, new solar systems are now powering community wet mills in Koileki and Raimutin. Wet-mill managers have also been trained to operate and maintain the systems, helping ensure long-term community ownership.

It’s one of two #DFATBPP partnerships in Timor-Leste that launched in 2024. Both are pilots for REnew Pacific, Australia’s $75 million investment powering off-grid communities across the Pacific and Timor-Leste with renewable energy.

They’re made possible through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative for climate-resilient infrastructure in the region delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP).
