Hani polyphonic folk song 哈尼族多声部民歌 of Yunnan, southwest China

A video featuring Hani polyphonic folk song (Hani zu duoshengbu min ge, 哈尼族多声部民歌), also called (Hani duoshengbu min ge, 哈尼多声部民歌) or Hani zu ba shengbu min ge (哈尼族八声部民歌), a folk tradition of the Hani people of Azahe township (阿扎河乡), Honghe County (红河县), Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), southeast-central Yunnan province, southwest China, in the area of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山). In this unique and marvelous tradition, eight vocalists (sometimes accompanied by traditional string and/or wind instruments) sing with eight distinct melodic lines, which enter successively and intertwine in unpredictable and often dissonant fashion.

The Hani people (Hani zu, 哈尼族), who number approximately 1.75 million and speak a language in the Loloish (Yi) branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group, live primarily in China's Yunnan province, with smaller populations in Burma, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. They practice rice farming on massive terraced fields, and in 2013 the Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2006 the tradition of Hani polyphonic folk song, centering on Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, was included in the First Batch of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). The sub-agencies responsible for maintaining these lists, both under the aegis of the aforementioned ministry, are the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage (文化部非物质文化遗产司) and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (中国非物质文化遗产保护中心, CICHPC).

Also in 2006, the tradition of polyphonic music of the Hani ethnic group, "rice seedling-planting folk songs" (哈尼族多声部音乐“栽秧山歌), was added to the First Batch of the Yunnan Province Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List (云南省第一批省级非物质文化遗产保护名录).
