Stayed overnight in Fort William on my way to the Cairngorms in Feb 2024. It was so quiet. I have heard online that the carpark I stayed in is now restricted and the local council are not allowing motorhomes or capers to stay overnight. They want you to use one of the three commercial campsites that are close to Fort William. This is nonsense. The two nearest were closed in Feb. The other is not walking distance. Who wants to pay £30 a night or more just to park up .
I actually spent over £200 in Fort William in the shops. The manager of Trespass Outdoor said the place was dead. They need more people to visit. It is only busy during school holidays which is not sufficient to maintain the local economy. That's why shops are closed and boarded up.
Amazing that the supposed outdoor capital of the UK was deserted. I saw more people in Aviemore .
