In September 2021, Save The Waves Coalition traveled to the Azores, Portugal to help preserve surf ecosystems through their Surf Protected Area Networks (SPANs) program.
The trip’s highlight was the iconic Save The Waves Film Festival, led by big wave surfer João de Macedo. The festival hosted 6 events, 25 films, 6 ocean literacy school visits and multiple beach cleanups across five islands.
Save The Waves and partners worked at each stop to introduce the benefits of surf ecosystem protection and met with surfers from Azorean ocean communities passionate about protecting their home breaks.
The Regional Government of the Azores has committed to protecting 30% of its ocean.
Through Save The Waves and the Blue Azores program, local surfers' voices are being elevated for inclusion in protected areas designations across the archipelago.
