In Diohine (Fatick), livestock plays a central role in regenerating the land through a rotating fallow system known as “atos” in Serer. What farmers call fallow is often described by agro-pastoralists as pasture — a shared space where herds fertilize the soil and biodiversity rebounds. Here, the presence of transhumant herders is not perceived as a threat but welcomed as a gift to the community, even though Diohine’s own children spend months each year in transhumance away from the village. This episode reveals how cooperation, ecological knowledge, and mobile livestock create true abundance for soils, herds, and people.
This short documentary, directed by Jean-Daniel Cesaro, Étienne Delay and Baba Ba, shows how research takes root in the rhythms of local communities. By observing everyday realities and listening closely to the people of Diohine, the film seeks to reveal seeds of innovation that can improve the quality of life for residents and travellers alike, while strengthening the environment and ensuring food security.
Funded by the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Initiative, this work highlights jhow participatory rangeland management could be implemented in Senegal through pastoral and agro-pastoral territorial units.
