A great few hours spent at Dunkeswell Aerodrome today, where on a bright but blustery Thursday afternoon x4 Boeing Apache AH-64E models of the Army Air Corps 653 Squadron conducted two waves of student pilot training visits to the airfield, positioning around Runway 17 Threshold area to meet their military tankers and vehicles. We were treated to SLAYR01 ZM731, SLAYR02 ZM736, SLAYR03 ZM737 and SLAYR04 ZM741
The staff at the airfield were incredibly proactive and had their viewing area open for the afternoon wave of Apaches, allowing enthusiasts to get some great shots of the four ship marching towards them from the far end of the runway, at one of Devons historic wartime airfields.
Dunkeswell Airfield was built between 1942 & 1943 by George Wimpey and Co and was initially occupied by the USAAF 479th Anti Submarine Squadron and then by the US Navy and was the only US Naval Airbase in Europe who undertook U boat hunting in the Bay of Biscay using specialised B-24 Liberator bombers, and we take a look around the Heritage Centre located at the airfield, to see some of the exhibits detailing the fascinating history of Dunkeswell!
