Estonia. Latvia. Lithuania. Three small NATO nations sitting right on the edge of a potential geopolitical inferno—and they’re not waiting for anyone to save them.
In this episode, we dive deep into how the Baltic states are transforming themselves from vulnerable buffer zones into hardened front-line defenders of NATO. I’m Tuomas, a former officer in the Finnish Defence Forces, and having worked extensively alongside our Baltic partners, I can tell you: their preparations are serious, rapid, and often underappreciated by the wider world.
In the face of increasing Russian aggression—military, cyber, and informational—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have each launched historic military build-ups. This isn’t just about weapons; it’s about national will, collective memory, and strategic necessity.
We break down:
Massive defence budget increases, from around 1% of GDP in the 1990s to over 5% today
Lithuania’s mechanised upgrades with Boxer IFVs, Leopard 2A8 tanks, NASAMS air defence, and Caesar NG artillery
Estonia’s cutting-edge capabilities including HIMARS, IRIS-T, a national “drone wall,” and new infrastructure like Camp Reedo
Latvia’s localised military production, including Patria 6x6 vehicles, ASCOD 2 IFVs, and newly ordered Swedish Archer artillery
The return of conscription and massive reserve force expansion across all three nations
The Baltic Defence Line, a modern network of bunkers, trenches, and obstacles stretching across hundreds of kilometres
NATO’s growing footprint in the region—including German, British, French, Polish, and Nordic deployments
The bold decision by all three Baltic countries to withdraw from the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, reflecting a stark, practical shift in doctrine
But the defence doesn’t stop at firepower. With GPS jamming, undersea sabotage, and cyberattacks becoming the norm, the Baltics are also leading the charge in information warfare preparedness and electronic resilience.
Importantly, they don’t stand alone. As members of the NB8 group and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF)—which we covered in a previous video (linked below)—they are tightly integrated with Nordic and British forces. If attacked, fighter jets from Poland and Scandinavia could be engaging enemy targets within hours, and ground forces would follow within days.
This is not theoretical. This is strategy, doctrine, and resolve made real.
