In this video, our attention turns to the side edges, the selvedges. Part 1 covers the techniques for determining the right number of stitches to add to a selvedge, evenly picking up those stitches along the side edges and knitting the border using Variation 1. The end result is firm, no-roll crochet edging with sharp, squared corners. No more flare, no more puckering, no gaps… just a perfect transition from the main piece to the border. Variation 1 is used when the selvedge is less than the width of the needlebed. In other words, you have plenty of needles to do the entire border from cast-on to bind-off without seams so you only have to pay attention to what’s going on in the middle.
In my earlier videos you have already learned to start the cast-on edge with the Perfect Crochet Edging and also how to bind-off the Perfect Crochet Edging when you get to the end. Now we can build upon those fundamental skills as we explore the selvedges. If you want more detail, check out all the related videos by watching my Latchtool Techniques playlist: https://studio.youtube.com/playlist/P...
In Part 2 of How to Add the Perfect Crochet Edging to the Selvedge, you will learn Variation 2 which includes specific steps to create the Invisible Join. The Invisible Join is both flat and Invisible from both the knit and purl sides. This means you can break a lengthy selvedge into smaller segments. And when finished, the crochet edging appears seamless.
