The 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is one of the most iconic American muscle cars of the late 1970s, instantly recognizable by its aggressive styling and famous “Screaming Chicken” hood decal. Built on GM’s F-body platform, the ’78 model features a long, low hood, flared fenders, a rear spoiler, and the signature quad square headlights that debuted in 1977.
Under the hood, it was typically equipped with Pontiac’s 6.6L V8 (400 ci) or the Oldsmobile 403 V8, depending on emissions regulations in each state. While horsepower figures were lower than early muscle-car years, the Trans Am compensated with strong torque, a performance suspension, and the iconic shaker hood scoop, giving it attitude even at idle.
Inside, the car offered a driver-focused cockpit featuring a deep-dish steering wheel, sporty bucket seats, optional engine-turned aluminum dashboard trim, and gauges centered on performance.
Famous for its starring role in Smokey and the Bandit, the ’78 Trans Am remains a symbol of late-70s American performance and style—loud, bold, and unmistakably cool.
