‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ I played on my 1977 USA Stratocaster, which I bought new in 1977 from Hessey’s Music Shop in Liverpool UK.
Hessey’s was quite famous from the 60s, when the Mersey sound kicked off in Liverpool, followed by Manchester with a multitude of Groups’ as they were called then, springing up in North West England, I was one that picked up the guitar and played in a few groups’
My 1977 Strat Has a Beautiful Figured Natural Ash Body, and is heavy, Originaly it had a Black Scratch plate.
Around twenty years ago I swapped the pickups and put on a set of Fender 57/62s and they absolutely transformed the guitar, I a lso swapped the scratch plate for a White pearl one, to give the guitar a face lift, the guitar was much lighter in colour when a bought it, as it has matured over the years, not just in colour, as the sound seems to have also matured, ‘Old Stripey’ is by far my most favourite guitar.
The Recording is a One take’ un rehearsed effort, which is the way I enjoy playing these days, so the tune remains Fresh, I find spontaneous playing leads to free expression and risk taking when playing, that can result in inventive results, but also the odd glitch or bum note, which if not too bad I don’t stop to fix these days.
Vic.
