Lack of water or drought stress is the most common plant stress encountered in the landscape. Newly planted trees are more vulnerable than established trees. Further, old trees are more vulnerable than trees in their prime.
Species also plays a big role in drought tolerance. Some species are adapted to drought and will need very little care during dry conditions. However, for many other common species, drought has a negative impact on nearly every physiological process in the plant. A plant could take months or even years to rebound from drought stress.
Applying a layer of organic mulch a few inches thick is always a good practice, and will do wonders for your trees during a drought. Another important consideration is to make sure that your trees and shrubs have good soil and growing conditions.
