Using stuffed animals, I will be discussing the aspects of preparing the surgical site for a dog/ cat spay and neuter.
Once the anesthesia tech clears you to begin....
(1) Position pet as it will be in surgery (2) Clip fur & vacuum if needed (3) Identify location of intended incision (4) Glove (5) Scrub- Rinse- Scrub- Rinse- Scrub- Rinse (6) Block

(7) Move patient into surgery (8) wait for anesthesia to reconnect patient to anesthesia/ monitors (9) Don sterile gloves & begin sterile prep
A) Clipping parameters for Spays:
Cranial edge= xiphiod process, Caudal edge= pubis, Lateral edges= ribs/ groin
B) Clipping parameters for Dog Neuter:
Cranial edge= 2 inches in front of penis, Caudal edge= testicles, Lateral edges= ribs/ groin
C) Clipping parameters for Cat Neuters:
Clip/ Pluck the hair over the testicles. If there is long hair on either side of the testicles, it can be shortened with clippers.
** We will be using dilute Chlorhexidine as scrub & sterile water as rinse.
*** The line/ testicular blocks will be determined by the veterinarian. We will be using Lidocaine or a combo of Lidocaine & Bupivivcaine.
