The bike came equipped with a Thunderbird ED-100 front derailleur which Shimano started making about 1975. It was a low end derailleur but performed well.
Interestingly the rear derailleur was a Shimano Positron which used an indexed system providing discrete positions for each gear whereas conventional rear derailleurs relied on the rider to move the shift lever just the right amount to select the desired gear.
Shimano thought the idea of the indexed Positron system would appeal to novice riders thus opening up cycling for more people to enjoy.
