Three years ago, I started my Travis, Bitter, Blood Berry, No Damage (and no strength upgrades) challenge. Against my initial doubts that it was even possible, I’ve finally managed to kill Jasper Batt Jr., finishing the challenge, once and for all.
It took a ton of effort to get to this point. My No Damage Jasper fights with Shinobu/Henry taught me a lot, and I spent hours working on reliable strategies. In all honesty, it’s probably a good thing I avoided serious attempts here for three years because I doubt I had the skills necessary to kill him back then.
Jasper 1 was typical. He gave me a rather lackluster pattern, but as always, he wasn’t hard to deal with.
Jasper 2 is the phase I'm sure everyone was waiting to see. Somehow, I developed a fairly reliable battle strategy. I stayed reactive throughout this phase, relying on parries for most of the damage. I was slightly more aggressive in his first sub-phase, but upon the transition to sub-phase 2 (introducing his teleport attack), I relied on parries almost exclusively so I wouldn’t get caught in a bad position, which is why I wait around quite a bit and don’t always attack at seemingly-obvious windows.
By far, I spent the most time working on dodging his teleports, studying other no damage Jasper videos online (from omegaevolution and sup3rsmash8) and seeing what worked for me. Here's my technique: once he teleports, let go of the Z button, dodge, press Z, dodge, let go of Z, parry the final hit. In general, the dodge direction doesn’t matter too much, though I did try to dodge in certain directions for better positioning. After sub-phase 1, I pretty much kept my fingers on the D-Pad at all times, and since he tends to teleport more than once in a row, I had to stay as alert as possible, but amazingly enough, the teleport dodging actually became second nature after a while.
Sub-phase 3 introduces his tornado attack, and fortunately, it can be parried, though with some caveats. While it’s possible to parry the attack from most (if not all) distances, it’s really hard to time from further away, so I had to stay close to him. In addition, the tornado can hit you more than once, so I compensated by parrying once, attempting to parry again just in case, and then dodging. He at least telegraphs his tornado attack pretty obviously.
I went back and forth on implementing the ecstasy power. I ultimately opted to use it at a few points as it provides free damage, a full battery charge, and a small mental break. That said, I did have to be careful coming out of it, which is also why I didn’t pop it until the end of sub-phase 3 because it wasn't safer at any other point in the sub-phase.
Because of the lack of strength upgrades, this phase was pretty long, but he was actually fairly manageable after all of my practice. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I reached a point of consistency where any failed attempt was usually my fault rather than Jasper’s. In fact, I had three successful J2 kills that were thrown away because of Jasper 3.
Jasper 3 gave me so much grief. Unlike J1 and J2, J3 can give you patterns that are basically impossible to avoid. Specifically, if he uses his wind attack more than once (or even just once sometimes), you’re guaranteed to get hit. You can avoid the wind attack by popping the ecstasy power if you have it, but if you don’t, the only maybe-possible way is by dodging with full battery (which I never even got once in practice). I just had to hope for a good pattern, which he thankfully gave me in this attempt. I played this phase pretty safely, not being too aggressive to not get caught off-guard by his right hook (though I had some close calls). I popped the ecstasy power right at the end to ensure the kill.
I was jumping for joy after the final blow. I never thought I’d actually do it, but I am so glad that I finally finished my Travis, Bitter, Blood Berry, No Damage challenge after so long. This fight is one of the best videos I’ve ever recorded.
