Bronica Camera Usage Instructions
Thank you for purchasing a Bronica camera. This document contains important information regarding camera operations to ensure you capture precious photographs. Please read this document along with the instruction manual for your camera's main body.
Refer to the following pages in the respective manuals:
• ETRSI Body Manual: Page 36
• SQ-AI Body Manual: Page 38
• GS-1 Body Manual: Page 34
Film Back
• When attaching the film back, always remove the dark slide completely. The shutter will not operate if the dark slide is not removed. Even if the dark slide is partially removed, the shutter can still be released.
• Before use, ensure you read the main body instruction manual, safety precautions, and this document. Keep them safe for future reference.
• If using accessories like AE finders or motor winders, refer to their respective manuals.
• Film backs are categorized for 120 film and 220 film. Use the designated film back for each type.
• For 35mm film backs (SQ-AI: SQ-1135N/W, ETRSI: ETRS135N/W), use a focusing screen with 135 frame lines for composition confirmation.
Before Use
• Before important events like weddings or overseas trips, perform test shots to ensure the camera and accessories function properly.
• For GS-1 and SQ-AI models, the exposure meter in the built-in finder will not display accurately if the film back is not attached.
• Check battery consumption before shooting, and always carry spare batteries for trips. If the camera battery is depleted, the finder and shutter speed will not function correctly.
Maintenance
• For frequent use, have the camera checked at a service center every 2-3 years and overhauled every 4-5 years.
Film Loading
• Pay special attention to the film orientation during loading. Follow the instruction manual to load the film correctly. Improper loading may result in unexposed film (120 film) or incorrect exposure (220 film).
• Before shooting, ensure the dark slide is removed.
Winding Mechanism
• The winding crank completes film advancement, mirror lowering, and shutter setting in one full rotation. The finder screen becomes visible after winding. Small incremental winding is also possible.
• Motor drives (SQ-I for SQ-AI, Motor Winder EIII for ETRSI) enable quick motorized winding.
Battery Precautions
• Batteries may discharge naturally over time. Even unused batteries can lose charge. Always carry spare batteries.
Mirror-Up Shooting
• When not using the camera for extended periods, remove batteries from the camera body, motor winder, or motor drive.
• Set the mirror-up lever to the normal shooting position when not using mirror-up mode (ETRSI: horizontal, SQ-AI: "N" position, GS-1: vertical).
• The camera relies on batteries for shutter speed control, shutter release, and powering the exposure meter. Check battery consumption before shooting and carry spares.
Safety Precautions
• Handle the dark slide carefully to avoid injury. Store it in a safe place when not in use.
• Keep the camera out of reach of infants to prevent choking or injury.
• Do not look directly at the sun or strong light sources through the lens to avoid vision damage.
• Ensure lenses, film backs, and finders are securely attached to the body. Improper attachment may cause damage or injury.
• Store batteries out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
General Precautions
• Avoid placing the camera in areas with water, humidity, steam, or dust to prevent malfunction.
• Use batteries correctly. Mixing old and new batteries or incorrect installation may cause malfunctions or fire.
• Do not place lenses in direct sunlight to avoid fire hazards.
• For repairs or suspected malfunctions, consult the store or Bronica Service Center. Do not disassemble or modify the camera.
Additional Notes
• For multi-exposure, set the lever before the first exposure. Switching after exposure may cause slight film movement.
• Bronica cameras use a lens shutter system compatible with all shutter speeds for flash photography. For handheld shooting in dark environments, switch to manual mode and select a suitable shutter speed (e.g., 1/125 sec) or use a tripod.
