By 1945, people were beginning to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel of World War II. Popular songs, which had been promising that someday they would be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover and urging parted lovers not to sit under the Apple tree “with anyone else but me,“ could finally anticipate the happy ending. “It’s Been a Long, Long Time“ captures the mood of relief and release, and almost giddy sense of joy that swept the country, as first the war in Europe moved relentlessly to an end, and then, within four months, the war in the Pacific came to an abrupt halt. This song echoed the sentiments of parents, sweethearts and returning servicemen throughout the re-awakening world.
