I'm down at the wonderful undervalued Botanic Gardens at the base of the Stranmillis and Malone roads near Queens University and backing on to the excellent Ulster museum.
The main feature of the gardens has to be the early 19th century Palm House. Erected and opened in 1840 it is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear cast iron glasshouses in the world!fd It predates any similar glass house in Ireland and even Kew gardens no less!
It was designed by Charles Lanyon and is made up of two wings, the cool wing and the tropical wing which contains the dome. In the past these have included an 11 metre tall Globe Spear Lily. The lily, which is native to Australia, finally bloomed in March 2005 after a 23 year wait. The Palm House also features a 400 year old Xanthorrhoea .
