Lane splitting and filtering is legal and encouraged in South Africa.

How to lane split safely?
Do so on roads which you know the path and general traffic patterns.
Do not go faster than 20 - 50 km/h than the traffic around you (depending on their average speed).
Stay vigilant and do not forget to keep looking around and not only in front (tunnel vision).
Own the road while remembering that you are still invisible.
Yes, a loud exhaust does help, without going fast enough to create a doppler effect, the sound from your exhaust can aid in alerting other vehicle drivers, otherwise falling asleep in traffic, that you are around.
