In 1973, for the first time two Interzonal tournaments took place, in Petropolis (Brazil) and Leningrad (USSR). The Leningrad event, which was held in city’s Dzerzhinsky House of Culture on the city’s Poltava Street, was won by Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi on 13½/17, with Robert Byrne taking 3rd place with 12½ points. These three players progressed to the 1974 Candidates matches
Petropolis even was won Mecking 12/17, Polugaevsky 11,5/17, Portisch 11,5/17.

The 1974 Candidates Tournament was played as knockout matches. Spassky as the loser of the last championship match and Petrosian as loser of the previous candidates final were seeded directly into the tournament and joined by the top three from each of the two interzonals.
