The "Her em Iteru" (On the Nile) is a song cycle written by Phillip Roberts, with text derived from the Papyrus of Ani (Book of the Dead). This set of 3 pieces is reminiscent of death and rebirth.
The first piece, "Teser ent Iteru" (Barley of the Nile), speaks of the Field of Reeds; the afterlife that the Ancient Egyptians strove to live in after death. The speaker describes being fulfilled with food and drink, maintaining the fields with the Gods, and the beautiful landscape that is familiar to them.
The second piece, "Ankha, Ankhes" (I live, it liveth), uses an extended piano technique to mimic the sound of the Ancient Egyptian harp. The speaker of the piece is a mother who thanks the Gods for the life that she and her newborn child have been granted. In the B section, a hypnotic worship commences where she offers her child to Them, that she and her baby will live long lives under their protection.
The final piece, "Em Aqah" (The Flood), is a celebration of life and the Nile's inundation. The speaker introduces themselves as "Tehuti", or the Egyptian God "Thoth", God of Wisdom and the one who brings the flood.
