A bundle of cuteness that's too big of a bite
When someone mentions a Schnauzer, you wouldn't exactly think of a beast to run from. That just goes to prove you shouldn't judge a dog by its most popular variant. The Giant Schnauzer, depending on gender, stands at 23 to 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs 25 to 36 kg. These gentle giants are the perfect choice of guardian for a family with young children or a place that needs discreet security. They have a calm character and rarely bark unless they feel themselves or their charge is in danger. They're quick to form strong loyalty to their humans, but as they are a very dynamic and energetic breed, they require strict training with lots of loving encouragement.
Giant Schnauzers are stronger than they look, and their thick, bushy coat makes it difficult for intruders to get a hold of them. In the 1990s, Giant Schnauzers were the exclusive breed used by the police of the state of Delaware for a full decade before sharing the job with German Shepherds.
The wolfish sheep guardian
The beautiful German Shepherds are the go-to choice of guard dog for numerous households and virtually all police force training facilities around the world. They are renowned for their agility, willpower, and basically unparalleled ability to sniff out a threat or trouble—both figuratively and literally.
Their intelligence and versatility have made them a staple of law enforcement and the military, and a favorite among big dog breed lovers. They are outgoing and very playful when young, so dynamic training is a must. Some of the most famous German Shepherds were Strongheart (properly named Edelban Oregon), who became one of the first dog film stars after working as a police and German Red Cross dog. And of course, Horand von Grafrath—the very first of the breed. He, his son Hector von Schwaben, and his grandpups Hektor von Starkenberg, Beowulf, and Pilot were the genetic foundation for the German Shepherds we know today.
The heavyweight family champion
Many people flinch when thinking about Boxers, which is completely unfair. These kind-hearted bulks are exceptionally gentle with children and even used as service or guide dogs for visually impaired people.
Although they count as a medium-sized breed, Boxers are some of the largest guard dogs overall, with a big head, bulky body, and square jaws. They were bred to bite into big prey and not let go—meaning they'll put up a tough fight for any intruder. Surprisingly enough, they're fairly easy to train, although they are playful and energetic due to their working-class dog genes. That’s why a training regime focused on strict discipline might backfire and make them stubborn. They need a light-hearted and playful teacher.
Boxers are fiercely loyal companions and surprisingly popular as show dogs.
The underdog guardian
The Kuvasz is perhaps a pretty underrated, not-so-widely-known breed, but they still make excellent guard dogs and deserve more mention. This breed is extremely territorial because they were originally bred for guarding, leading, and rounding up cattle.
Nowadays, this trait translates into an unusually strong aptitude for protecting its home and family—both humans and other pets. It is very large and heavily muscled, but despite that, the Kuvasz moves with inherent grace, especially when running, leading many to compare it to a wolf.
Their loyalty and the fact that their coat is odorless make Kuvasz dogs a wonderful choice for a family guard dog, especially for those who live in a house. They've even been known to gently round up their owner's children if they think the kids are wandering dangerously far. While they are quiet, polite, and friendly with people they know, Kuvasz dogs are wary of strangers and not afraid to show it—keeping a distinct borderline between the pack and outsiders, both human and animal.
