The seven regulars of the magistrate's office are each characterized by their unique traits: the empathetic and justice-seeking bureaucrat, Hachibei Butada, who always stands by the side of the weak; his superior, Kyuzo Aoyama, who appears cold and detached but is actually deeply compassionate and hates corruption in the bureaucracy; the typical middle-aged bureaucrat who ingratiates himself with his superiors and bullies his subordinates, Sojuro Isogai; the henpecked father of many children who does side jobs at home, Magoemon Hanada; the master detective of criminal investigations who falls in love easily but is also skilled in disguises, Genzo Yoshioka; the elite nephew of the magistrate who hates authority and is ready to fight, Heisuke Matsui; and the ambitious young hot-blooded man, Ichirota Furukawa. By depicting the individual episodes of each character, this work succeeded as a criminal drama or ""hobomono"" set in the Edo period. Note that the aspect ratio is 4:3 for the first to third episode and 16:9 for the fourth to seventh episode of "Hachidori Seven."
A magistrate's assistant at the Kita-machi Magistrate's Office, Kyuzo Aoyama (played by Hiroaki Murakami), leads a group of six eccentric detectives, including 'the reject Hachi' Hachibei Butada (Tsurutaro Kataoka), Sojuro Isogai (Saburo Ishikura), Heisuke Matsui (Tetsuhiro Yamada), Magoemon Hanada (Masao Orito), Genzo Yoshioka (Yoichi Hino), and Ichirota Furukawa (Koji Matsuo), as they fearlessly take on the evils of Edo.
