What skill are we covering today? The pass shot, also known as how to kick a soccer ball with inside of foot.
1. Start behind the ball.
2. Plant next to the ball.
3. On the foot you are striking the ball with, have your toe up and out, your heal down, and your knee pointing sideward so you can use the inside of your foot.
4. Follow through, land on your shooting foot, bring your back leg forward, and point your hips where you want the ball to go.
Point 1 for how to kick with the inside of your foot - Run at the ball and plant (with the non-striking leg) next to the ball.
Point 2 for how to shoot with the inside of your foot - Planting close to the ball will make it so that you turn your foot and strike the ball with the inside of your foot. Plant too far away from the ball and you will barely be able to reach the ball and will lose nearly all of the power on your shot. Make sure your plant foot is pointing at the portion of the net where you are looking to place the ball.
Point 3 for the soccer instep kick - Contract your leg back at the hip to bring your foot behind your body with only a slight bend in the knee. As you begin to forcibly drive your leg through the ball for a shot, make sure that your toe is up and out and your knee is pointing sideward so you can use the inside of your foot.
This form is identical to that of a pass, but you are adding a full body follow through to have a much stronger pass. The inside of your foot is softer than the hardest portion of your foot that you use when striking the ball for a driven shot. As a result, a pass shot has less power versus a driven shot, but because the form is similar to that of a pass, you will likely be more accurate.
Point 4 - After striking the ball, follow through with your leg to generate more power and accuracy on your shot. Follow through with the opposite leg as well. Therefore, after you strike the ball, you will be landing past the spot on the field from which you struck the ball initially. Essentially, strike the ball and follow through to a spot past where the ball was before you kicked it.
Pass shots are best used when shooting at the net from close range. Ideally, if you are between the penalty spot and the 18-yard box or closer to the net, then the pass shot is appropriate since shooting accuracy is a top priority when you are close to the net. Power matters too and that is why you should follow through with your leg as well as your entire body to hit a harder shot, but a well-placed shot is going to have a higher chance of scoring when you are closer to the net and the goalkeeper has so little time to react.
Avoid planting behind the ball (or next to it when it is rolling)
Avoid cross your legs, you must follow through the ball like if you were to shoot a driven shot.
Avoid lifting you shoulders and watching the ball go in, keep you head down to keep your form together.
Grab some soccer balls and head to somewhere that has a net or at least a wall. There are 4 major steps to this form and trying to do them all at once will result in terrible form. Instead, just aim to master the first step of having the ball in front of you and correctly approaching the ball. Next, once you master that, focus on properly planting next to the ball. Practice 10, 15, 20 times, knowing that you are doing deliberate practice to become a whole lot better a whole lot quicker. Then move on to striking the ball with the inside of your foot and once mastered, work on following though and landing on your shooting foot. Think of each point as a step. In order to get up a staircase, you have to take each step one at a time.
An example of a player known for taking pass shots is David Luiz. David Luiz has played at the club level for teams such as PSG and Chelsea. He has performed at the international level for the powerhouse Brazil. David Luiz's goal against Columbia in the 2014 World Cup is an excellent example of a pass shot. He used a pass shot from farther out than is recommend for most players, but when you can have the ball zigzag as much as he did, then it will likely be effective given the goalie will have a tough time tracking the ball to make the save.
