How To Replace A Moen 1222 Positemp Cartridge


Step 1: Shut off the water to your house or unit and drain all of the water lines by opening several faucets and hose spigots.

Step 2: Once the water is off and the pipes have all been drained you can remove the allen screw holding the Morn faucet lever onto the 1222 cartridge stem.

Step 3: Remove the Phillips screw holding the black (or silver) adapter in place. Remove the adapter and screw.

Step 4: Remove the two small white pieces as well as the stop tube.

MAKE A NOTE OF HOW THESE PIECES GO ON OR TAKE A PICTURE IF YOU HAVE TO

Step 5: Remove the two Phillips screws holding the shower escutcheon to the wall and remove the escutcheon.

Step 6: Remove the small horseshoe clip from the valve body. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE IT IN THE WALL!!!

Step 7: DO NOT LOSE THE LITTLE HORSESHOE CLIP IN THE WALL!!!

YES I AM REPEATING STEP 6 HERE WHEN I SAY YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL AND NOT LOSE THE LITTLE HORSESHOE CLIP!!!!!

Step 8: After you removed the little horseshoe clip and made sure you didn’t lose it…. attach your Moen cartridge removal tool to the Positemp 1222 cartridge stem.

You attach the puller by screwing the small inner screw into the cartridge stem.

Then you tighten the larger nut of the puller while holding the handle, until it pulls the cartridge out slightly.

Once the cartridge has pulled out slightly you can attempt to pull it out by twisting and working it out slowly.

It can be extremely difficult to pull the cartridge out and sometimes it may break.

Be patient. If it breaks then you may need to contact a plumber. We will address this topic in a future video though.

Step 9: Once the cartridge is successfully pulled out use a flashlight to ensure all the small pieces have came out.

It can be good to lay out the little black pieces to make sure they’re all out.

It also can be good to clean the inside of the valve body with a wire brush and flush out the valve body by turning the water to the house on briefly and then off again.

Be careful though as water will shoot out and go a decent distance.

Step 10: Insert the new GENUINE MOEN 1222 POSITEMP cartridge ensuring that the H is on the left and the C is on the right. You will see the H and C on the top side of the cartridge.

Also ensure that the new small black gaskets of the cartridge remain in place while inserting the cartridge.

In can help to twist the cartridge slightly while inserting it if that helps it go in easier.

DO NOT USE AN AFTERMARKET OR DANCO CARTRIDGE

ONLY USE A GENUINE MOEN CARTRIDGE

Step 11: Once the new Moen 1222 Positemp cartridge is in place you can reinsert the small horseshoe clip CAREFULLY SO YOU DON’T LOSE IT!!!

At this point you can ensure the cartridge stem is in the OFF position by rotating it so the notched part of the stem is facing down.

Step 12: Restore the water to the house and confirm proper operation of the new cartridge.

Step 13: Push the stop tube back in place as well as the two small white pieces.

Step 14: Set the escutcheon back in place with the two Phillips screws.

Step 15: Screw the small black (or silver) adapter back onto the cartridge stem with the Phillips screws the way it came off.

Step 16: Reattach the lever with the small set screw.

The shower should be off when the lever points at 6 o clock and it should rotate counterclockwise to stop at 9 o clock.

And thats it. You just replaced your Moen Positemp Cartridge. Congrats fam! 🤙
