“Luar do Sertão” (João Pernambuco)
Rosina da Rimini, soprano
Victor (Brazil) 45746, recorded in 1941
Still searching for biographical information on this very interesting singer. She was a Brazilian high coloratura soprano (acuto sfogato), and was well known in her native country for her extensive upper range.
What little information I can find is in Portuguese - which thanks to fellow researcher Rich Adkins, I can now provide a translation. This is from the description of another da Rimini video here on YouTube, and since it is not translated there, here it goes, minimally edited by me:
"Rosina da Rimini: Soprano Acuto Sfogato ("The Stratospheric Queen"). *Rosina was a Brazilian Soprano (from São Paulo) who was successful between 1939 and 1960, especially in her international career. Currently, of her recordings, only one known record remains, by Victor (45746), released in 1941, recorded in Rio de Janeiro, two years after her radio debut (under protests from her singing teacher, who considered her technique still somewhat immature). Recorded on side A is the song "Luar do Sertão - um Catullo da Paixão Cearense", by João Pernambuco; on side B is the aria "Souvenir", by Franz Drdla. She was accompanied by Lee Broyde on the Cassino Atlântico organ and Lazlo Muller on the piano. You can hear numerous notes above F6, such as A6 and B6 (sustained and also in staccato)."
I am expecting a package soon that includes a brochure (with a more detailed bio, and an autographed photo), so my research on this stratospheric singer is a work in progress.
