The Hillsboro Branch was once part of the Boston and Maine Railroad's network of lines throughout the state of New Hampshire. Today, though a fraction of its former length, the branch is jointly operated by Pan Am Railways, and the Milford & Bennington Railroad. Pan Am's local NA-1 serves many of the local industries, while the M&B runs "conveyor" trains between the Granite State Concrete aggregate facility in Milford and the quarry in Wilton.
On Thursday, August 15th, 2019, a friend and I had the opportunity to visit the short line gem of southern New Hampshire. As luck would have it, Thursdays were when both railroads operated over the same trackage, giving us plenty of railroading action. For motive power, the M&B ran its former CN SW900, with the cut of 10 hoppers and caboose. Pan Am sent its former CN GP40-2W, making for an exciting reunion of Canadian power.
