A look at Cardiff City Hall Clock on Thursday 28th July 2016.
City Hall is a civic building in Cathays Park, Cardiff, Wales, serving as Cardiff's centre of local government since it opened in October 1906. Built of Portland stone, it is an important early example of the Edwardian Baroque style.
The distinctive clock tower is 59 m (194 ft) in height has a 3.7 m-diameter (12 ft) gilded dial on each of its four faces.
The clock was built by Gillett and Johnston of Croydon and the hour bell and four quarter bells are each inscribed with mottoes in English and Welsh:
Hour bell: ‘Y gwir yn erbyn y byd’
(His truth against the world)
1st Quarter: ‘I mark time, dost thou?’
2nd Quarter: ‘Duw a phob daioni’
(God is all goodness)
3rd Quarter: ‘Time conquers all and we
must time obey’
4th Quarter: ‘A gair Duw yn uchaf’
(God’s voice on high)
