Our entire project was based on solving the most annoying and time-consuming problems farmers face and that is irrigation. Most farmers spend a good chunk of their time watering their fields manually. We wanted to make their lives easier and simpler. An automatic irrigation system like ours will do so by doing everything independently without the requirement of human labour. Spending less time on irrigation will allow the farmers to focus more on the quality of their crops. They can try to improve the other factors that go into growing crops instead of wasting time on a simple, yet time-consuming task like irrigation.
Our project takes a few short and simple steps to obtain the required results. We start off by using the camera on our device (phone or a laptop) to detect the leaves of the plant we are watering. Then we check the weather conditions using the same camera(sunny, rainy, cloudy, etc.).
Next, we use an Arduino LM35 temperature sensor to detect the temperature. After this, we use a soil moisture sensor (which has to be put inside the soil around the plant) to find out the moisture level which is calculated as a percentage. We then combine the data collected and depending on the different inputs, we use our program on PictoBlox to find out the estimated volume of water the plant requires. The required volume of water is then pumped out into the soil using a water pump. This process is fast, efficient and seamless, and it takes no longer than 15 seconds to carry out the entire process (This includes gathering data and then providing water to the plant). We think farmers can benefit greatly through this and we hope they’ll use it in the future.
