Here are seven essential facts about America's relationship with Panama regarding the Panama Canal over the past 200 years:
First, the U.S. was interested in a canal through Central America as early as the 1800s.
However, the French, led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, attempted to construct the canal in the 1880s but failed due to disease and engineering challenges.
Two. Did you know that the U.S. supported Panama’s independence from Colombia in 1903 to secure control over the canal zone?
In return, Panama granted the U.S. rights to build and control the canal through the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty.
Three. Construction and Control (1904-1914) – The U.S. completed the construction of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This act revolutionized global trade by providing a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The U.S. controlled and administered the canal for much of the 20th century.
Four. Panamanians resented American control over the canal zone which led to protests, most notably the 1964 riots, where Panamanians demanded sovereignty over the canal.
Five. In 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos signed treaties that gradually transferred control of the canal to Panama.
These agreements set a timeline for full Panamanian control by December 31, 1999.
Six. On December 31, 1999, the U.S. officially handed over control of the Panama Canal to Panama. This marked the end of nearly a century of American administration.
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) now manages the canal.
Finally, While the U.S. no longer controls the canal, it remains a key user.
The canal plays a crucial role in global trade and U.S.-Panama relations, with ongoing cooperation on security, trade, and infrastructure improvements.
