Biblia cum Glossa Ordinaria in Genesis

A review of the Biblia cum Glossa Ordinari in Genesis (ISBN 9781645853268). This volume is a red, sewn hardback with an illustrated dust jacket. The text of Genesis is based on the Challoner Douay-Rheims translation (the 1899 John Murphy edition).

The glosses (or comments) are "Comprised chiefly of excerpts from the patristic exegesis of Augustine, Jerome, Gregory the Great, and many others."

"Although hardly known in the modern era, the Glossa Ordinaria was the most popular and influential biblical commentary of the Middle Ages, surviving in thousands of manuscripts and referenced constantly by Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, and other medieval schoolmen." The paper is heavy, opaque, and light yellow in color. There is little to no show-through.

The Biblical text is printed in a red blackletter font about 14 points in height. Short interlinear glosses are presented in a 7.5 point font, while longer marginal glosses are in a 10 point font. The font used for glosses resembles Times New Roman.

The volume is large, measuring 11 5/16 x 8 3/4 x 1.2 inches in dimensions.

The source text for the translation is Adolph Rusch's printed edition of 1480/81. This edition was translated by Dr. Samuel J. Klumpenhouwer and published by Emmaus Academic.

I strongly recommend reading Dr. Klumpenhouwer's informative introduction before attempting to use this volume. The reader will also find the extensive endnotes quite helpful.
