Ease Index
There are many formulas available to instructors but one that is rather simple and easy to compute is to calculate the percentage of students who answer an item correctly: EI = (R/N )X 100
where the Ease Index (EI) is equal to the number of students who answered the item correctly (R) divided by the total number of students (N) multiplied by 100 to convert the results into percentage .Thus if 49 students out of a total of 60 answered the item correctly we would have EI =49 /60 X 100 or an Ease Index of 82 percent.
But what does this 82 percent mean?
The smaller the percentage the more difficult the question, the higher the percentage the easier the item.
