Europe in the early 1900's was a mess. Everyone wanted each other's land and oh boy did they not play nice. Germany sought to expand its empire as did Austria-Hungary (A-H) . I guess you could say they were a bit power-hungary. hehe. Anyway, yeah people neighboring nations and subgroups within Austria-Hungary were extremely unhappy. With the help of Russia, countries like Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania gained sovereignty from A-H, but were still a bit unsatisfied.

With a little nudging from Serbia, a group called the Young Bosnians (or Young Bosnia Movement) sought to get back at A-H for being a jerk. What better way to do that then assassinate a major political figure? So they did. On June 28th, 1914, A-H's Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg were gunned down in their car as they drove through Sarajevo.

It was pretty gangster, but totally not cool. Those gunshots were heard around the world (not literally, that would be physically impossible as the sound waves produced would probably eradicate half the planet) and the first world war broke out. Everyone is mad at Germany and A-H for being land-grabby jerks.

At least by the end Germany learned its lesson and was never aggressive afterward.
