Queen Catherine de' Medici is often associated with the infamous Massacre of St. Bartholomew’s Day, a dark chapter in French history. On August 24, 1572, violence erupted in Paris, targeting the Huguenots, French Protestants who had gathered for the wedding of Catherine’s daughter, Marguerite de Valois, to the Protestant prince Henry of Navarre.
The massacre began just days after an attempt on the life of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, a leading Huguenot and close advisor to Catherine’s son, King Charles IX. Catherine, concerned about the growing influence of the Huguenots on the young king, reportedly feared they might disrupt the monarchy's stability. It is believed that she and her advisors may have initially approved a targeted assassination against key Huguenot leaders. However, the violence quickly escalated beyond control, leading to a brutal massacre that lasted several days and spread across France, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Huguenots.
Catherine’s role remains a subject of historical debate. While some historians argue she may not have directly ordered the massacre, others suggest she was complicit or at least approved of the violence as a means to protect her family’s reign. This association with the massacre contributed to her reputation as the “Queen Serpent,” painting her as a cunning and ruthless figure willing to use extreme measures to secure her family's power in a time of deep religious and political division.
