Round Table Pizza was founded by Bill Larson in Menlo Park, California, in 1959. He opened the first location in the San Francisco Bay Area to create a family-friendly gathering spot where people could "share a little pizza with someone you love". The restaurant was named after the round redwood tables Larson and his father had built.
Founding: Bill Larson opened the first Round Table Pizza on December 21, 1959, in Menlo Park, California.
Inspiration: Larson was inspired to start the business after being exposed to pizza while serving in the U.S. Navy in Japan.
Growth: The company began franchising in 1962 and grew to over 225 stores by 1978. It expanded to over 500 locations by the time of Larson's passing in 2006.
Original Location: The original Menlo Park location is still open today, now operated by Bill's son, Bob Larson, who worked at the restaurant for 50 years before recently retiring.
Ownership and Modern Era: After a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2011, the company was acquired by Global Franchise Group in 2017 and merged with FAT Brands in 2021. In 2019, Round Table celebrated its 60th anniversary with a new logo and motto: "Pizza Royalty".
